The Badge that got away - (Left). The standard British Brigade 'Brunswick Star' used by most services nationwide at the time - the eight 'Knightly Virtues'.

Tyne Wear C.F.O. Pat Watters had other ideas - and got his way with his five Gold 'Fishtails' representing the boroughs amalgamated. A pump impeller on the central boss  - with the two rivers behind. The controversial 'W' over 'T' at centre came later - a reworking of the original 'T' over 'W'.
