Tunstall was opened just before the amalgamation of brigades that became the Tyne and Wear Metropolitan Fire Brigade. Originally it was a Sunderland Fire Brigade station on the borough's southern border.
The station radio callsign was 'ROMEO' - with two pumps using callsigns R01 and R02.
